Book review of Sense & Sustainability –Educating for a low carbon world (extracts-full review)
Newly published Sense & Sustainability by Ken Webster and Craig Johnson aims to make you think differently around the issues of sustainability and the environment. The book argues we are caught between climate change and a peak in oil production and that we are bound for a low carbon future: it will be the equivalent of a 2nd industrial revolution. Sense and Sustainability insists that schools and colleges need a revolution in their approach to green issues to keep pace and to dispel some common myths.(continues...)

Dear Craig I finally got round to reading Sense and Sustainability over half term. Congratulations to you and Ken, it's a superb book which has: (a) changed my way of thinking (i.e. Nature as Teacher/ Nature as Capital) by providing me with the necessary basic knowledge and understanding to BEGIN my journey and that of the school (b) confirmed to me, if it is not contradicting point (a), that we have intuitively begun to get some things right here (e.g. closed loop curriculum, beginning to incorporate Sustainable School Development into school development planning) (c) indicated that we have much to do e.g. ensure our new catering arrangements operate a closed loop model and that the school building extension for 2009-10 is designed and constructed wherever possible on closed loop principles (d) reminded me that, despite external pressures, I know what is important about teaching and learning and am determined to pursue the "right" path.

Sense & Sustainability - educating for a low carbon world Ken Webster and Craig Johnson with a foreword by Jonathon Porritt Publisher: TerraPreta in association with Yorkshire Forward and InterfaceFLOR, 2009 ISBN 978-0-9559831-0-8
This book sets a major challenge to educators and educational establishments by not only introducing the principles of sustainability to students but also seeking to change the way schools and colleges approach education and view themselves in the context of the local community and society in general.

Seminar Review
National Association of Field Studies Officers conference, 2009
Just to thank Ken for his presentations at NAFSO's conference. It was good to see an alternative approach to looking at the economy that could actually work. You left us all on a high and I'm certain it will affect the teaching of those who attended.
Thanks. Bob Bull NAFSO Exec.

Sense & Sustainability: Educating for a Low Carbon World, Ken Webster and Craig Johnson, TerraPreta, 2009, paperback, 165 pages, £15, ISBN978-0-9559831-0-8
This is a book for teachers who want to enhance their teaching of sustainability issues. It is relevant to a range of courses and levels and provides inspirational ideas that could prompt the creation of vibrant lesson plans. It is fully photocopiable so that teachers can pick and choose the bits that will speak most clearly to their own students. Although it does require a teacher input to match the content to the individual course, it could save a lot of time when planning what and how to teach.
